Like all little girls
If I didn’t have my way
I’d weep,
when scolded
I’d cry
tears came easy.
A lecture from mom
“Don’t show me your tears
don’t be touchy
tears won’t get you anywhere
Be strong.”
“Your husband won’t stand it
in-laws won’t bother
a woman weeps
no one cares
Be strong.”
My bruised feeling
dismissed, dissed
sorry for myself
no one loves me
I’d wipe my tears.
I learnt not to go
crying to mom or dad
just suck it up
deal with it.
Hard to be strong.
College dorm, on my own
comforting homesick girls
who’d break down in tears
Me strong?
Thanks mom.
Lonely in America
finding words to
console weeping friends
my tears missing.
Thanks mom.
I raise my boys
clear now
how hard it was
for mom to be strong
love is work.
Trials come, trials go
mom’s best advice
gets me through
tears dried
when I was a child.
